About this object
What it is
A 450 g glass jar of Meli Elatis Menalou Vanilia, an EU Protected Designation of Origin registered on 2 July 1996, the first Greek honey the EU protected. It is about 80% fir honeydew: pale, with a pearly look, and slow to crystallise.
Where and how it is made
The hives stand in the fir forests of Mount Mainalo, in the Gortynia and Mantineia areas of Arcadia, Peloponnese (GR-J). Honeydew honey is made by bees from the sweet secretions found on fir trees rather than from flower nectar.
How to use it
Spoon it over yoghurt or cheese, or stir it into mountain tea. Because it crystallises slowly, it stays pourable for a long time.
What we have not verified yet
No producer is signed. Maker: [partner to be sourced]. The price is an estimate. Honey is a high-fraud food: the EU ‘From the Hives’ check found 46% of 320 honey samples imported into the EU suspected of added sugar syrup. We will buy this honey only with a lab report attached to the batch. The jar travels in a moulded pulp insert. It does not ship to Australia, where honey is inspected on arrival, and US orders need FDA Prior Notice.
