What it is
A cooking and serving spoon carved by hand from wood, made for use in the kitchen.
Where and how it is made
Metsovo, Epirus (GR-D), high in the Pindus mountains. The town was the stronghold of the Epirus woodcarvers, the ταγιαδόροι (tagiadori), who travelled in family crews across northern Greece and Thessaly and carved ceilings and church screens. Workshops still carve in the town today, and the Metsovo Folk Art Museum sets the reference style.
How to use it
Stir, taste and serve. Wash by hand in warm water, dry at once, and never leave it soaking or put it in a dishwasher. Rub with a little food-safe oil when the wood looks dry.
