About this object
What it is
A pair of silver earrings made in filigree, called συρματερά (syrmatera, wirework) in Epirus. Epirote silversmithing entered the Greek National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013, and Ioannina silversmithing was added in 2023.
Where and how it is made
Ioannina, Epirus (GR-D). In the 18th century, silverwork also developed in Metsovo, Kalarrytes and Syrrako. Filigree is built from fine silver wire, twisted and shaped by hand, then soldered into open patterns. The craft is documented at the Silversmithing Museum in Ioannina. We intend to source through the Association of Ioannina Silversmiths.
How to use it
Wear them, and store them dry in the pouch provided. Silver darkens with air; a soft silver cloth brings it back.
What we have not verified yet
Greece has no independent hallmarking system, so a ‘925’ stamp is only the maker’s own claim. Every pair we sell will ship with an assay or XRF certificate. No workshop is signed. Maker: [partner to be sourced]. The price is an estimate. Parcels are insured and need a signature on delivery; outside the EU, duties are paid by us.
