About this object
What it is
A 250 g pack of small, blue-black, sun-dried currants registered as Korinthiaki Stafida Vostitsa, an EU Protected Designation of Origin. This is the original Corinth raisin, the fruit that gave English the word currant.
Where and how it is made
Around Aigio in Achaea, Western Greece (GR-G), a town known in medieval times as Vostitsa. The grapes are dried in the sun, and trade in currants from the area is documented back to the 13th century. The Farmers Union of Vostizza, a cooperative, packs and sells them.
How to use it
Stir a handful into pilaf with Krokos Kozanis saffron (our Kitchen has the recipe), bake them into bread, or eat them from the pack. At €7.50 they are also the simplest way to reach the free-shipping threshold.
What we have not verified yet
The cooperative sells directly, so this is a Wave 1 candidate, but our contract is not yet signed. The price is an estimate that still has to be confirmed against a wholesale quote. US orders need FDA Prior Notice before dispatch.
