About this object
What it is
A natural honeycomb sea sponge, 12 to 14 cm across, left unbleached. The brown colour is the sign of the least processing; bright yellow sponges have been bleached.
Where and how it is made
Pothia, Kalymnos, South Aegean (GR-L). Kalymnos is historically the sponge divers’ island. In the 1980s most sponges in the eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean were found infected, a loss blamed on pollution, and the sponge-diving fleet shrank from about 30 boats to 4. Several workshops in Pothia still sell sponges.
How to use it
Soak in warm water until soft, then use it in the bath or for washing. Rinse well after each use and let it dry in the air.
What we have not verified yet
No processor is signed. Maker: [partner to be sourced]. Imported sponges are sold on the island too, so we will buy only with harvest-area paperwork and state the harvest area on the record. A cited retailer sells a similar sponge for €22.00. It is light and unbreakable, but it does not ship to Australia until a BICON check on marine products.
