About this object
What it is
A small marble panel, about 15 x 15 cm, carved in relief by hand. Tinian marble craftsmanship was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015. Traditional motifs include cypresses, flowers, birds and ships, the same ones carved into lintels and fanlights on the island.
Where and how it is made
Pyrgos (Panormos), Tinos, South Aegean (GR-L), the centre of Greek marble carving. The village has had a School of Fine Arts since 1955 and has a Museum of Marble Crafts. Each tile is cut and carved with chisels, so no two are identical.
How to use it
Set it on a shelf, lean it against a wall, or fix it into masonry. Dust with a dry cloth; avoid acidic cleaners, which etch marble.
