About this object

What it is

A ταγάρι (tagari), the rectangular wool shepherd’s bag of Crete. It is woven as one piece, folded, blanket-stitched along the sides and given a braided strap.

Where and how it is made

Anogeia, on the slopes of Psiloritis, Crete (GR-M), the best-known weaving village on the island. Weaving there has long been women’s work at the loom, passed down in the village. An Anogia Weaving Centre was announced to open on 8 May 2026.

How to use it

Carry it across the body for books, shopping or a day on foot. Wool is warm and hard-wearing. Air it rather than washing it; if it needs cleaning, hand-wash cold and dry flat.
