The address
Crete Κρήτη
The southernmost region, which produces about a third of Greek olive oil. PINAX lists four Cretan objects, two foods and two crafts, and two boxes built from them.
About this object
What it is
A handmade Cretan farmer’s knife with a horn handle. The Cretan form has a forked handle end and a V-shaped point, and the blade often carries an engraved μαντινάδα (mantinada, a Cretan rhyming couplet).
Where and how it is made
Sifaka Street in Splantzia, the old town of Chania, Crete (GR-M), still called Machairadika, ‘the knife shops’. The knife-makers’ street is still at work, and the Chania heritage portal lists the trade. Each knife is made by hand in a workshop there and fitted with a horn handle.
How to use it
A general work knife for the garden, the table and the field. Dry it after use, oil the blade now and then, and keep horn away from long soaking in water.
What we have not verified yet
No workshop is signed. Maker: [partner to be sourced]. A secondary source puts a basic handmade farmer’s knife from about €85.00; our price follows that, not a quote. Shipping is strict. We never sell this knife to the UK, where the Offensive Weapons Act 2019 restricts remote sales of bladed articles. It ships within the EU only, with adult signature, in a parcel marked as a bladed article. Not to other countries at launch; each would need its knife rules checked first.
