The address
Crete Κρήτη
The southernmost region, which produces about a third of Greek olive oil. PINAX lists four Cretan objects, two foods and two crafts, and two boxes built from them.
About this object
What it is
A 450 g glass jar of Pefkothymaromelo Kritis (πευκοθυμαρόμελο Κρήτης, pine and thyme honey of Crete), an EU Protected Designation of Origin registered by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/1555. It is a blend of pine and thyme honey.
Where and how it is made
Crete (GR-M). The registered name covers honey produced on the island to the PDO specification. We intend to buy from a Cretan beekeeping cooperative.
How to use it
On bread, over fresh cheese, or in warm (not boiling) water with lemon. It is also the honey packed inside the tagari in our Psiloritis box (GR-M).
What we have not verified yet
Why this name and not thyme honey: plain ‘Cretan thyme honey’ has no geographical indication, so its origin depends on the seller’s word. The PDO name can be checked. No cooperative is signed yet. Maker: [partner to be sourced]. The price is an estimate. As with every honey we list, we will ask for a batch lab report, since EU checks found many imported honeys suspected of added syrup. The jar ships in a glass insert, not to Australia, and US orders need FDA Prior Notice.
