Fake test
Burn test on a loose thread, away from anything flammable: silk burns slowly, puts itself out, smells like burning hair and leaves a soft bead that crushes. Polyester melts and drips, smells of chemicals and leaves a hard black bead. Source: sewing.org (opens in a new tab)

About this object

What it is

A silk scarf from Soufli, a town in the Evros regional unit of East Macedonia and Thrace (GR-A). Greek silk is rare in shops, and far from the island picture most people hold of Greece.

Where and how it is made

Soufli was a major silk centre from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. The PIOP Silk Museum has been open in the town since 1990, and silkworm raisers and small silk workshops still work in the town. We intend to buy from one of those workshops, so that the record can name where the silk itself was produced, not only where it was sewn.

How to use it

Wear it at the neck or tie it to a bag. Hand-wash cold with a mild soap, never wring, and press with a cool iron.

What we have not verified yet

No silk house is signed. Maker: [partner to be sourced]. The price has not been measured and must be confirmed with a supplier quote. Fabric weight, size and weave are unknown until we see the stock. The scarf will carry a fibre label. It is light, and ships to Greece, the EU, the US, Canada and Australia; the UK opens after our UK VAT registration.
